Light Their Candle
Do you have a just cause that you passionately believe in and want to pursue? Does it stir your soul when you think and talk about it?
If this is the case, then chances are that you are either at the brink of gaining support from like-minded people or have already started to do so. The truly great causes in life can
never be pursued alone. We need a team of people who share our vision. By implication, it also means that you are the Leader.
So how can you build a strong and convicted team of people that will support your vision? The following might be some helpful tips:
Apply the Pareto Principle:
Focus 80% of your time on the top 20% of your people; they will produce 80% of the results you want. How do you know who they are? They will show you. These are the ones who will inconvencience themselves in order to serve the cause and be of service to others. They will actively promote the cause. Their actions will be congruent with their talk.
Focusing only on the top 20% might seem harsh and uncaring, but the truth is that we can not expect more for people than what they expect for themselves. The top 20% always expect more for themselves and their results will always mirror this expectation. Expecting more for people than what they expect for themselves will only frustrate you and shame them, which places a burden on your relationship with them! Be comfortable with this fact and meet them where they are at.
Build their confidence:
Your top people may have all the potential in the world, but the lack the confidence to succeed. This is especially true when they have no experience in your field of interest. Your first action should be to equip them with tools that will gaurantee their success. Small victories, first over themselves and then over any other external adversities they are facing, are checkmarks behind their self-confidence.
Create a learning environment for them. The fastest growing organizations have learning systems that ensure rapid personal growth and development. Competency will flow from personal growth and confidence will no doubt follow.
Introduce them to great Mentors:
Your team's ability to produce extraordinary results is directly related to the level of thinking of the leadership core. Your results can never be better than the mental capacity of the sum total of the leadership team. The higer the level of thought, the greater the results.
Your own thoughts are most likely stretched by someone you admire, someone who has a vested interest in your success. Allow your people to meet with your Mentor and others and spend time with them since they will elevate their level of thinking. After all, Einstein did say that we can not solve the problems we face today at the same level of thought we had when we first created them!
Be humble and teachable:
The worst thing you can do to slow down the momentum of your team is to think that you know it all. Make sure that you learn from as many other leaders as possible, even if they are in your own team. It is not uncommon for the Master to eventually be surpassed by the Student. Accept this fact and be grateful that you have had an impact on this person's life.
If you can let go of your own ego, you will be able to let others fly! The serendipity of letting go is a fast growing team with a multitude of victories under the belt! The cause must always be bigger than the self.
Good leaders cause people to have confidence in them. Great leaders enable people to have confidence in themselves. Light their candle!
